🚴 Palaces, Pedals & Pastries: Biking Vienna and Slovakian Hot Chocolate (Days 5-6)
Our guides were fantastic as AMA provided a lecturer and a rear rider to watch over us while crossing roads. We biked to and past many iconic landmarks of Vienna such as the Opera House, Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs, St. Stephens’s Cathedral just to name a few. A real treat was riding by the Austrian University of Economics to view the unique architecture built around 2010 as part of the college’s expansion. It currently has 200,000 students with cost for most European students of 44 euro per year! American’s can attend for just 1750 Euro for an entire year.
Culture, Castles & Countryside: Danube Cruise Adventures in Days 3–4
Cesky Krumlov has a long history dating back to 1250. The large castle pediment has over 50 buildings overlooking the small town. The bohemian village is quite charming, very picturesque with old world scenes. Churches, a castle, and the Vltava River frame beautiful views around every corner. Carol wanted to sit and sketch a scene with her art supplies, I wandered off to explore. The town was fairly quiet despite several buses of tour groups having all descended at the same time. Being shoulder season the town had settled into it’s off season routine.
From Bavarian Beer Halls of Munich to the Blue Danube Cruise (Days 1 & 2)
Despite the usual fatigue from a red eye flight we went to explore the town with a lunch stop at Hofbräuhaus to listen to live polka band performance, sample the beer, and have traditional german food. The two other couples, Carol’s parents and aunt/uncle are non drinkers they did enjoy the festive atmosphere of a friday lunch crowd and the last day of October. While 24 hours is enough to get the feel of a city and what there is to see, you always want more and we will come back for an extended visit. Munich is very friendly and when you see everyone out in the afternoon socializing at the outdoor beer gardens and restaurants you are reminded what makes trips to Europe unique to travel in the states.
A First Look at Our Upcoming Danube River Voyage – November 1
Here’s an overview of our upcoming cruise with AMAWaterways on their Romantic Danube itinerary November 1.
Carol and I will fly from Charlotte nonstop on Lufthansa to Munich, Thursday and arrive on Friday morning to spend Halloween in Munich.
Accompanying us on this trip will be Carol’s parents and her aunt/uncle. Both are in their early 80’s, fairly good health but will require a bit of extra time for walking activities. As I have spent years working in therapy so I have plenty of experience with seniors who have mobility and endurance limitations. One of them will need a rollator with a seat during the tours. AMA allows them on tours but not to be used on the boat. Most river cruise lines offer tours of various activity levels with their basic tours being slower city walking tours.

A Capital City You May Not Know but Should
Bratislava—once called Pressburg—was a major player in Central Europe. From the 10th century, it was part of Hungary and even became Hungary’s capital in 1536. Kings and queens were crowned at St. Martin’s Cathedral, and the crown jewels were kept safe here. Imagine the city back then, full of royal ceremonies, Mozart and Beethoven performances, and a castle that was the summer home of Austria’s Queen Maria Theresa. She even had the castle’s grand staircase redesigned so she could ride her horse up it!
